On Wednesday, October 15, 2025 , the Callais v. Louisiana Voting Rights case is being heard at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, DC. -- a case that could gut Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act , the key safeguard against racially discriminatory redistricting. The outcome could silence millions of voters of color and reshape Congress for a generation.

Bisignano Admits Trump Administration Backing Away From Promise Not to Cut Social Security

The following statement was issued by Richard Fiesta, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, in RESPONSE to SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano’s September 18, 2025 interview on FoxBusiness:

Yesterday, the Commissioner of the Social Security Administration confirmed what we have feared all along: the Trump Administration is preparing to break its promise not to cut Social Security. He admitted they are considering raising the retirement age beyond 67 to address the trust fund shortfall.

“Let’s be clear: raising the retirement age is a cut in benefits, plain and simple. It forces Americans to work longer for less, and it robs the middle-class retiree of thousands of dollars they have earned with a lifetime of hard work.

“This Administration cannot be trusted with Americans’ hard-earned retirement security. Its policies have already drained at least a year of solvency from the trust fund, making the situation worse, not better.

“The real solution is fair and straightforward: require the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share into Social Security. That will strengthen the program for today’s retirees and future generations without cutting a single dollar of our earned benefits.

“Our members will not sit quietly while politicians in Washington try to dismantle Social Security. We will keep organizing, speaking out, and holding every elected official accountable to protect the benefits we have earned for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren.”

340B ACCESS Act means health benefits go where they belong – to the people

The #340B program was meant to be a lifeline – helping low-income, underserved, and marginalized communities afford essential medicines. But too often, hospitals collect discounts only to mark up drug prices, while families – many of them Black, Latino, Indigenous, rural – go without. That’s a broken promise.

The 340B ACCESS Act would bring much-needed accountability: transparency in pricing, guardrails so that discounts actually reduce patient costs, and limits on aggressive medical debt practices and excessive markups. It helps restore economic fairness, racial justice, and ensures that the benefits of 340B go where they belong – to the people.

On the passing of Alexis Herman

The A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) is deeply saddened by the passing of former U.S. Labor Secretary Alexis Herman , a committed and dedicated leader whose life's work was committed to ensuring that equal employment opportunities were available to all, regardless of race, creed or color.

In the early 1970's, Alexis Herman was one of the first recruiters and trainers in the A. Philip Randolph Institute's Recruitment Training Program (RTP ). She was the head of APRI's Women's Department to recruit, place and support young apprentices, especially young women, into the Building Trades.

Members of the Black Women’s Roundtable flex their financial muscle in Arlington, Va., spending their dollars at a local Costco, one of a few corporations to ignore the 47th president’s directive to end diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Black customers fill their carts at a Costco in Arlington, Va., to set an example of socially conscious spending at the retail business that chose to continue pursuing diversity, equity and inclusion programs despite a White House edict dissuading such initiatives.

“The renowned” Rev. Otis Moss III

APRI Cleveland Chapter member Karon Waites and “the renowned” Rev. Otis Moss III arriving in Selma, Ala

Born on September 16, 1970, Otis Moss III is the son of Otis Moss Jr. and currently serves as the senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. He is known as a preacher, activist, author, and filmmaker. Moss III focuses on black theology and addresses issues such as mass incarceration, environmental justice, and economic inequality. He graduated from Morehouse College and earned advanced degrees from Yale Divinity School and Chicago Theological Seminary.

Both Reverend Otis Moss Jr. and III have made significant contributions to religious leadership, social justice activism, and community advancement, continuing a legacy of civil rights advocacy spanning multiple generations.

Born on February 26, 1935, Otis Moss Jr. is an American pastor, theologian, speaker, author, and activist 2 . He played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement and was a close friend of both Martin Luther King Jr. and Martin Luther King Sr 2 . Moss Jr. served as pastor of several churches, including Mount Olive Baptist Church in LaGrange, Georgia, and Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio 2 . He was also an advisor to President Jimmy Carter and has connections with influential figures such as Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Oprah Winfrey.

340B IS A BROKEN PROMISE TO OUR COMMUNITIES

Congress launched the 340B Drug Pricing Program in 1992 to help hospitals and clinics better serve low-income and uninsured patients. 340B was created to help close the health disparities we see all the time in minoritized communities – a mission the A. Philip Randolph Institute fully supports.

However, today the program falls far short of achieving that goal. With no meaningful oversight, 340B has contributed to America’s health inequities rather than address them. Large health systems buy 340B medications at steep discounts – sometimes for as little as a penny – then mark up the drugs and resell them for profit. But patients never see the savings.

To make matters worse, some state lawmakers are pushing legislation that would hand more power to chain pharmacies, allowing them to profit from discounted medicines while doing nothing to help those in need. And the health systems who profit are encouraging them! This approach is severely misguided and only deepens health inequities.

Follow the Money: Who Really Benefits from 340B?

340B corporate deals – called contract pharmacy arrangements – exploded by over 12,000% in the last 14 years .
Contract pharmacies aka big pharmacy chains like CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart, along with insurance middlemen such as Express Scripts and Optum Rx, pulled $3 billion out of the 340B program last year.
The number of 340B pharmacies in historically Black, Latino, and lower-income neighborhoods dropped from 2011-2019, while growing in wealthier areas instead .
Well over half of 340B hospitals' off-site clinics and pharmacies aren’t even located in the same ZIP code as the qualifying hospital they’re connected to – instead they are planted in communities where the average income is 30% higher.
Roughly two-thirds of 340B health systems provide less charity care than the national average for all hospitals. Some spend less on charity care than the value of their tax breaks.

Community Voices Demand Change

“It’s been thirty years since Congress created the drug discount program, and it rightly enjoys bipartisan support. But making sure the program is improving health equity, not doubling down on a system that enriches already wealthy neighborhoods at the expense of poor underserved communities, should be a top priority .” - Rev. Al Sharpton

“ Inadvertent loopholes have been utilized, increasing profit margins for the hospital system while they have reduced services in one of our predominantly Black communities . It is immoral to benefit off the backs of Black and Brown residents under the guise of healthcare, and it must cease immediately.” - Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney

Fixing 340B for the People Who Need It

Right now, health systems are not required to use their 340B profits to help low-income patients afford medicine—and many don’t even include prescription assistance in their financial aid policies. As a result, abuse of the 340B program is rampant.

We must demand real reform to ensure 340B benefits the communities it was meant to help—vulnerable populations in underserved areas. Discounts should go to patients, not corporate profits.

This week the U.S. House of Representatives is voting on H.R. 9495, a bill which includes language that would give the Secretary of the Treasury almost unilateral power to strip the tax-exempt status from any nonprofit organization it deems to be “providing material support to terrorist organizations.” The law would not require Treasury officials to explain the reasoning behind the decision or for the department to provide evidence. It was narrowly defeated in an earlier vote on November 12 because it failed to clear a 2/3rds majority vote in the House.

During last week’s vote more than 50 House Democrats voted in favor of the bill, which would give future administrations the power to silence dissent and chill opposition, without due process for those targeted .

House Republicans reintroduced the bill in a second attempt to pass it and changed the rules so only a simple majority is needed to pass it and move it to the Senate.

A vote on the House floor is expected this week. So sign the petition here - before they vote - NOW!

This legislation threatens nonprofit workers at ProPublica, the Texas Tribune, Spotlight PA, American Civil Liberties Union affiliates, the Natural Resource Defense Council, Southern Poverty Law Center and more who are members of The NewsGuild-CWA.

We are urging our members and supporters to contact their U.S. Representative TODAY and ask them to vote NO on H.R. 9495 and preserve free speech at nonprofit organizations. Use this form to send a letter to your representative in Congress.

I write to you to express my deep concern with H.R. 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, given a provision in the bill that would silence nonprofits and pose a threat to organizations nationwide.

Section 4 of the bill, “Termination of tax-exempt status of terrorist supporting organizations,” would give the Secretary of the Treasury near-unilateral power to strip the nonprofit status on any organization considered to be providing “material support or resources” to a terrorist organization without any guardrails. Such unilateral power could easily be abused by any future administration to target political opponents, shut down newsrooms and silence freedom of speech and affiliation in the United States.

This legislation threatens nonprofit workers at places such as ProPublica, the Texas Tribune, Spotlight PA, American Civil Liberties Union affiliates, the Natural Resource Defense Council, Southern Poverty Law Center and more who make up a large part of The NewsGuild-CWA. And the legislation threatens the existence of unions, which are also nonprofit organizations. Free speech and a free press are the bedrock of American civil society and the promise of democracy. This bill threatens to censor, if not eliminate, our valued nonprofit newsrooms and advocacy organizations.

I see this legislation as an immediate and serious threat to the many nonprofit organizations that do groundbreaking work in this country. Free speech and a free press are the bedrock of American civil society and the promise of democracy.

I ask you to vote NO on H.R. 9495 and preserve free speech. We must be a nation that ensures nonprofit organizations and newsrooms are safe from the threat of losing their tax-exempt status at the hands of any future administration.

APRI's statement on the murder of Tyre Nichols

Today, on the First day of the shortest month of the year that Black History is celebrated, the nation is mourning and observing the last rites of Tyre Nichols. Once again, family and friends will gather together to celebrate his short lived time on this earth.

Tyre is the latest in the vast and growing number of Black lives who have been murdered by undisciplined, unbridled police. This time it was in Tvre's home town of Memphis. Tennessee. Their given reason... He "started to fight", after a traffic stop. There is no evidence that the officers were in harm's way when they captured and unmercifully beat this unarmed young Black man.

Once again, the phrases "shock and dismay" are embraced as the accepted expressions over the horrific footage that portrayed the unaccepted brutal and outrageous beating that Tyre endured before succumbing to his injustices.

We know and appreciate that all policemen do not act irresponsibly. They put their lives on the line every dav to serve and protect their communities, and we thank them. The revelation that the police officers in Tyre's case were Black is inexcusable, and it is NO excuse to overlook their actions. It is no more excusable than the numerous actions of White officers lacing the same accusations. Those that act in an irresponsible manner should face the consequences of their actions.

Once again, "prayers and sympathy are offered to the family. The eulogy will be delivered by the Rev. Al Sharpton, a familiar comfort to the countless numbers of families who have experienced the suffered losses of loved ones who were brutalized and or killed by the police.

Vice President Kamala Harris will attend the service, along with other senior level administration officials. Their benevolent acts of support DOES raise the question, "What are You going to do about it?*

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which passed in the House in 2021, but failed in the Senate, would limit qualified-immunity policies that protect officers accused of misconduct; create a national registry of sustained disciplinary actions against officers; and ban chokeholds and ban no-Knock warrants, among other measures.

We join with the voices of others to urge Congress to pass this stalled legislation aimed at combating police misconduct. Do it Now. This is the month that we could celebrate the beginning of conversations about policing in a responsible way to benefit all of Americans.

Roosevelt that resulted in Roosevelt issuing Executive Order 8802, which banned discrimination in government and defense industry employment. The excerpt was included in A. AFL-CIO Constituency Groups Demand DOL Withdraw Proposed "Tip Theft" Rule

Washington, DC - The Labor Coalition for Community Action, a coalition of the six constituency groups of the AFL-CIO, including the A. Philip Randolph Institute, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, Coalition of Labor Union Women, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, and Pride at Work, issued the following statement on the Department of Labor (DOL)'s proposed "tip theft" rule that shifts the ownership of tips from workers to employers.

"This proposed rule to steal hard-earned tips from the pockets of restaurant workers is utterly despicable. Instead of affirming that tips are the property of workers, the Trump administration is championing corporate greed and acting as an extension for the National Restaurant Association.

With tip theft already a common occurrence in the restaurant industry, the legalization to shift ownership of tips to employers is another example of working people being robbed of what they are due. Trickle down policies, such as this proposed rule, will maintain the status quo and wedge an even larger gap between the richest and the poorest.

If enacted, workers will lose an estimated $5.8 billion in tips, with 80% of that coming from women workers. With women and workers of color comprising the lowest paid segments of the industry, this rule would disproportionately impact the most vulnerable and feed into a cycle of poverty and economic instability.

We are committed to advocating for the rights of workers in all industries and to fight against greedy policies that fuel into the systematic oppression of people of color, women, and LGBTQ workers. We demand that the Department of Labor withdraw this disgusting "tip theft" rule immediately and call on it to do its job: to fight for workers, not employers."

Statement by Rev. Terry Melvin & Clayola Brown President, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists & A. Phillip Randolph Institute

On Thursday, January 11, the 45 President reaffirmed his white supremacist and racist stance. In an Oval Office meeting it was reported that Trump called the nations of Haiti, El Salvador, and Africa "s-holes."

It was reported that he said: "Why are we having all these people from s-hole countries come here?" Not only is this question offensive, derogatory, and inflammatory, but it also exposes his deep seeded feelings of white supremacy and racism. This is a racist president who treats foreign policy with the same respect Andrew Jackson gave Indigenous Americans.

Trump has stated he would prefer people from Norway to immigrate than those from darker nations.

Why would this government take a position that Blond-haired and Blue-eyed Europeans should receive preferential treatment when immigrating to this country over the dark skinned? He is confirming his historical position of being racist, white supremacist, and just how he denied Blacks housing in his buildings, he is using the same practices on immigration.

While it is clear Trump is a racist, what is missing is a conversation of why these countries are supposed "s-holes." Haiti was once a thriving and prosperous country with a bounty of resources.

After the slaves defeated the French for independence, the country has been ravaged by cruel leaders propped up by foreign governments. El Salvador was getting by until they elected a Socialist President. Then their country became ravaged by civil war as the US financed and armed the opposition in the name of killing Communism. The history of African exploitation, the illicit flow of funds, and the regime building done by foreign countries is lengthy and present. All this means these countries are suffering directly by US interference, but yet we are unwilling to support them. Learn the history.

The US is now a stain on the world. This president has eroded our standing with the world and is polarizing the populace. He is dangerous, racist, and a misogynist.

We denounce this president and his racist ways, and we call upon the Republican Party to publicly denounce this hate mongering or suffer the consequence of being considered like him. We call upon our press to demand an answer on this agenda of white supremacy and lies, similar to how the Netherlands press corps demanded answers from the US diplomat for his lies.

We call upon all those in the US to engage in the political process, to organize their communities, and to make sure the person in the White House does not reflect the heart and soul of our nation.
